JavaScript Break and Continue

The Break Statement

The break statement "jumps out" of a loop.

You have already seen the break statement used in an earlier chapter of this tutorial. It was used to "jump out" of a switch() statement.

The break statement can also be used to jump out of a loop.  The break statement breaks the loop and continues executing the code after the loop (if any):

Example

for (i = 0; i < 10; i++) {
  if (i === 3) { break; }
  text += "The number is " + i + "<br>";
}

The Continue Statement

The continue statement breaks one iteration (in the loop), if a specified condition occurs, and continues with the next iteration in the loop.

This example skips the value of 4:

Example

for (i = 0; i < 10; i++) {
  if (i === 4) { continue; }
  text += "The number is " + i + "<br>";
}
